Simulation
Simulation games aim to be an accurate, virtual variation of the real world, where players can experience real life opportunities they usually couldn’t in everyday life. This creates the chance for players to enjoy their dream when it usually wouldn’t be possible, like building a city, piloting an aircraft or becoming a celebrity etc… Often they incorporate open-ended objectives, letting them set their own goals, providing creative freedom and promoting experimentation. Players often face challenges that require practical solutions and problem-solving skills, such as managing resources efficiently or achieving specific objectives.

These games often feature a lot of realism, such as physics, economy, or societal structures. This makes the gaming experience more immersive as it makes it more relatable. This is exampled in the management of resources, as having to oversee finances, time and energy is much more fun to do in a game rather than real life, due it being much easier to do virtually. Progression is often tied to development, like upgrading facilities, unlocking new features, or improving efficiency. This means that playtime is linear with success, providing incentive for customers to use the game.
The most common types of simulation are of life, management, and vehicles. Life focuses on controlling the daily lives and development of virtual characters, like in The Sims and BitLife. Management games are where players control systems such as cities and businesses, usually shops or farms. Finally, vehicle games simulate the operation of vehicles involving fixing and building them, this is seen in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and car driving simulator.

Based on real-life
The Sims 4 is a simulation of everyday life, covering real-world elements such as careers, relationships, and household management. This means that players can live their dream life virtually, making feasible what usually isn’t in the real world. This opens a realm of possibilities, giving people the opportunity to experience many different variations of real-life, and the ability to control and manipulate these too however they see fit.

Realism
The gameplay in The Sims 4 is exaggerated and simplified realism, with the core features being the sims needs for survival, such as hunger, sleep, etc, but combined with humorous and light-hearted interactions and fictional elements (eg. Supernatural expansions). You can speed up or slow down time to decrease boredom, and there is a wide variety of things to do due to the emergent gameplay style, so the options feel endless, making the game extremely replay-able. The visuals are detailed, yet stylized, focusing on the sim's interaction with the environment around them rather than hyper-realism.
Developing
Your Sims develop similarly to how humans progress through life, the more they experience/practice, the more they improve their skills and careers, such as cooking, painting or engineering. This development contributes towards their income and interactions with others. They can also evolve as they age, reaching milestones such as becoming a teenager, pregnant, married etc.. This is what makes their virtual lives unique as these events shape their personalities and aspirations.

Management
In the Sims 4 you must manage your Sims needs, keeping them alive, happy and healthy, otherwise they may fall sick mentally and/or physically, and in some cases this may be fatal. If you have a family or multiple characters, sometimes you need to control all of them, which can increase the difficulty of the game as caring for them simultaneously can be overwhelming. Furthermore, managing the household and financial side is a core element of the game, making sure your sims have the funds to survive, in a safe setting that has the resources to improve quality of life and help your characters reach their aspirations. Sometimes this can be difficult to look after, as you must be mindful to not go over budget.
Target
Demographic
The Sims 4 is aimed at teens and young adults due to its strategic and life-simulation events. The game is ideal for players interested in simulation, storytelling, interior design, and creativity, as players enjoy the freedom to design homes, develop characters, and create unique life stories. Regular expansions keep content fresh and engaging, providing new career paths, locations, and life events.
Overall Reviews
The Sims 4 generally has received positive reviews for its creative and immersive approach to life simulation. Many players and critics appreciate the flexibility and customization options, particularly in character creation and building, where players can design detailed Sims and unique homes. The game's emotional and personality-driven gameplay also adds depth, allowing Sims to react based on feelings, which enhances storytelling and provides more character immersion. However, while the base game has been expanded over time, it initially launched with fewer content options, leaving many players to rely on paid expansion packs to fully enrich their experience. Despite this, The Sims 4 has an average rating of around 7-8/10 on major review sites, with praise for its detailed customization, variety of expansion packs, and overall replay-ability.
My Evaluation
I do enjoy playing the sims 4, as I like being able to have the creative freedom design my own houses and characters, but I often need to set myself challenges to complete, as I find the career options to be quite repetitive and boring. However, I do find the relationship aspect of the game to be interesting and fun, as meeting new sims, or bonding with ones you already know is a unique and rewarding experience. I also find the events that you host to be enjoyable, as you have timed challenges to complete to have a successful time, like serving cake or talking to 5 people. A major downside for me is the necessity to buy expansion packs to improve the replay-ability and overall fun of your gaming experience. If you don't want to spend money on this game then it can become dull rapidly, which i think is unfair casual gamers who aren’t willing to spend money. Overall, I have spent a lot of hours on this game, and I do like playing it, but in large intervals as I don't find it entertaining for a long period of time after a week of playing.

Target
Demographic
Bitlife is mainly aimed at older teens and adults (16+) due to mature themes and life scenarios that include romance, finances, legal issues, and sometimes dark humour. Due to it being mainly a mobile game, it is very accessible and easy to play, with simple interface and mechanics. The game appeals to those who enjoy making life choices and experiencing different outcomes, with the open-ended structure allowing players to explore different life paths, keeping it engaging and unpredictable for repeat playthroughs.
Overall Reviews
BitLife generally receives positive reviews for its entertaining, text-based simulation style. Critics and players appreciate its simplicity and high replay value, as each playthrough allows unique life paths based on random events and player choices. Many find BitLife addictive and fun, due to the range of entertainment it offers, from careers and relationships to more humorous or risky actions, like crime and social media fame. However, some reviewers point out that BitLife can become repetitive, especially since similar events often reoccur. Additionally, some players dislike its in-app purchases, which unlock premium features or remove ads. Despite these drawbacks, BitLife maintains a high rating, of 4.7 out of 5 on the App Store, and 4.4 out of 5 on Google Play, based on over a million reviews, especially for players who enjoy humorous life simulations that explore a broad range of scenarios and unexpected outcomes.
My Evaluation
I really enjoy playing Bitlife, due to the weekly challenges and the frequent updates that often deliver exciting features, such as new career paths or activities. This means the game has many different possibilities, and I love the variability of being able go from a criminal mastermind at the age of 16, to an actor with millions of Instagram followers at 72. Bitlife feels like a more upbeat version of reality, that is easily accessible anywhere due to it being a mobile game that doesn't require Wi-Fi. However, I may be biased because I do own God mode, which allows you to control many aspects of the game without adverts, and provides new career options that enrich the gaming experience and drastically change it from that base game.
