Hybrid

Hybrid games feature a combination of elements from multiple genres, creating unique and varied player experiences. This provides new possibilities in gameplay, attracts broader audiences, and keeps gameplay fresh through the diverse range of challenges. These games often blend narrative-driven objectives with goal-based challenges, like combat missions, resource gathering or puzzle-solving. However, developing a hybrid game presents unique challenges, as integrating multiple genres requires balancing mechanics to avoid overwhelming the player.

Some popular combinations are:

  • Action-adventure: Combines combat and exploration, focusing on storytelling and character development. Eg. Uncharted.

  • Puzzle-platformer: Fuses platforming and puzzle-solving to create engaging mental and physical challenges. Eg. Celeste.

  • RPG-action: Merges RPG elements like character progression with real-time action mechanics. Eg. The Witcher 3

  • Sandbox-survival: Combines sandbox creation with survival mechanics, allowing players to interact with the world creatively. Eg. Minecraft.

GTA V

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) is an open-world action-adventure game, set in the fictional city of Los Santos. In the story mode, players follow the lives of three main protagonists: Michael, a retired bank robber; Franklin, a street hustler; and Trevor, a volatile criminal with a chaotic personality. The story alternates between their perspectives as they navigate crime, personal struggles, and dangerous heists, creating a layered and intertwined narrative. GTA V Online is the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V, offering players an expansive and continuously evolving online version of Los Santos. In GTA Online, players create their own characters and engage in a range of activities, missions, and challenges with friends or other players worldwide. The game blends free-roaming exploration with cooperative and competitive modes, allowing players to customize and upgrade their vehicles, properties, weapons, and clothing, building a unique lifestyle within the game.

Action-adventure

GTA V offers open world exploration across the city of Los Santos and its surrounding areas, which is a feature of the adventure genre. However, the gameplay, such as the high-speed chases, shootouts and stealth missions introduce a lot of features from the action genre.

RPG

Each protagonist has skill attributes (e.g., stamina, shooting, strength) that can be upgraded through gameplay, adding a layer of character development seen in RPGs. Additionally, players can customize character appearances, vehicles, and properties, giving them control over their in-game identity and lifestyle, which is an RPG characteristic.

Racing/sport

Different types of vehicles, such as cars, motorbikes, boats and aircrafts can be driven and raced. GTA online offers racing modes, from street to off-road challenges. All of these are features usually seen in the racing and sport genres.

Simulation

In GTA Online, you can buy businesses, properties and invest in stocks, simulating financial management. Furthermore, players can participate in real-life activities such as sports, shopping, and even yoga, adding a life simulation aspect.

Target
Demographic

GTA V is for adults (18+) due to mature themes, strong language, violence, and criminal scenarios. It is ideal for fans of open-world, action-adventure, and crime genres. The game’s narrative depth, freedom of exploration, and range of activities attract players interested in immersive, realistic virtual environments and complex storytelling. It is suitable for intermediate to experienced gamers. GTA V’s mechanics are accessible for casual play, but its detailed missions and complex heist setups appeal to advanced players as well.

Overall Reviews

Grand Theft Auto V consistently receives top-tier reviews, often rated as one of the best games of all time. Critics and players praise its intricate open-world design, engaging narrative, and impressive attention to detail. GTA V holds an average rating of 9–10/10 across major platforms, with high marks on OpenCritic, where it is celebrated for its expansive, interactive world and complex character-driven storyline. Critics particularly highlight the introduction of three protagonists with unique backstories and skill sets, which allows for rich storytelling and varied perspectives. The addition of GTA Online has kept the game fresh, extending its appeal through multiplayer modes and regular updates. However, GTA V does receive some criticism for its mature themes and reliance on microtransactions in GTA Online, which some players feel disrupt the balance for those who don't wish to spend extra money. Overall, though, the game continues to be highly recommended, even years after its initial release.

My Evaluation

I found GTA V very fun, with a broad range of things to do and an interesting map to explore. The storyline was very interesting, with unique missions to complete. I liked how you switched between the different characters, gaining insight into each of their lives and personalities. However, I don’t know anybody else who plays GTA V, so when I was playing GTA Online I found it quite boring, as it felt like it lacked things to do. Whenever I would try to do a mission, I would have to wait for ages for people to join, and most of the time they would quit halfway through. Although, if I was playing with friends, I think my experience would have been much more enjoyable. I like how there is lots of options for things to do, as when I didn't enjoy online mode, I could switch back to story mode, which I think is a successful aspect of it being a hybrid game.

Among Us

Among Us is a multiplayer social deduction game, where players work together—or against each other— on various maps in space. Players are divided into two roles: Crewmates, who complete tasks around the map, and Impostors, whose goal is to sabotage the mission and eliminate Crewmates without being caught. As the game progresses, players can call emergency meetings to discuss suspicious behaviour, and they vote on whom to eject from the game, hoping to eliminate the Impostors. With simple mechanics but high social interaction, Among Us encourages players to use deception, teamwork, and observation to either maintain the mission or disrupt it. The game’s unique combination of strategy, mystery, and humour, along with its cartoonish graphics and customizable characters, has made it a popular choice for players of all ages, fostering a community where each match feels fresh and unpredictable.

Strategy

Both Crewmates and Impostors must strategize. Crewmates deduce the Impostor's identity based on behaviour, while Impostors plan eliminations and sabotages to avoid suspicion. Strategic discussions and voting allow players to influence the group, encouraging social strategy, manipulation and persuasion. Players must make decisions based on limited information in order to win, incorporating lots of features from the strategy genre.

Action

Crewmates complete time-sensitive tasks (e.g., wiring, refuelling, navigation) that require quick, accurate actions. Impostors, meanwhile, perform swift eliminations and sabotage, adding urgency and risk. Impostors can sabotage systems, creating tense action moments as Crewmates race against time to repair systems before they lose. This is drawn from the action genre.

Puzzle

Tasks performed by Crewmates, such as aligning engines or fixing wiring, are mini-puzzles requiring players to pay attention and complete actions correctly. These add a logic-based challenges. Impostors have to use puzzle-like reasoning to avoid detection, choosing times and locations for sabotage and eliminations that will minimize suspicion and maximize disruption. You could argue the whole game is one big puzzle, with crewmates trying to solve who the imposter is – which is why it relates to the puzzle genre.

RPG

Players take on specific roles (Crewmate or Impostor), each with unique objectives, creating a basic RPG feel as players embrace their role’s objectives and mindset. Though limited, players can customize their appearance with outfits, hats, and pets, allowing for a slight role-playing element as they embody their chosen character identity in the game world.

Target
Demographic

This game is aimed at kids, teens and young adults, yet it can appeal to all ages, due to its party-game aspects as the game’s core revolves around communication and social strategy, catering to players who enjoy multiplayer interactions, especially within friend groups. Fans of games like Mafia, Werewolf, or The Resistance are drawn to the mystery and social interaction of Among Us. Moreover, the simple controls and straightforward mechanics make it easy for beginners.

Overall Reviews

Among Us has received positive reviews as a fun, social deduction game that’s easy to pick up but challenging to master. Critics praise its unique blend of strategy, social interaction, and humour, making it perfect for both friends and online play. It holds scores around 8-9/10 across platforms like OpenCritic, appreciated for its accessibility and addictiveness. Some people say that the game shines best with other players you already know, as random online play can be less engaging. Overall, Among Us is celebrated as a fun party game that can be enjoyed by everyone.

My Evaluation

When played with a large group of people you know, among us can be extremely fun! It gets everybody involved as you all work together to find the imposters. The comedy provided when you are listening to 5 people simultaneously accusing each other at the top of their lungs, over which little colourful blob killed the other, is unmatched. The tasks are entertaining yet simplistic, and the strategizing and plain luck it takes to be a successful imposter is downright stressful. However, when you are playing this game with strangers, and no voice chat, it can be extremely bad, as the lack of communication derails the whole concept of the game, people get voted out randomly and the imposter is almost never caught, making it extremely difficult to win as a crewmate, which you are most of the time. Despite this, the memories I have from among us will never be forgotten, as each game provided a unique and fun experience due to its emergent gameplay style, and it was great at providing laughs with friends and family.
