RPG
Role-playing games (RPGs) put you into the perspective of the character you are playing as, where you assume their role within a rich, immersive and unique world. This genre originates from classic pen-and-paper role-playing experiences such as Dungeons & Dragons.
Commonly, RPGs focus on character progression, where users are tasked with the goal of developing their character's skills, abilities and attributes through experience points, which are usually gained through completing quests, challenges and defeating enemies. These quest systems involve missions or objectives that advance the story, giving players freedom in how to approach them (linear or non-linear). Players can normally measure their progress through skill trees, their level, and new abilities they may acquire throughout. Another key feature is item selection and inventory management, creating an additional layer of decision making, as players must choose what items to buy, sell and equip; as well as choosing what to keep, as there may be limited space.
Some sub-genres include Western RPGs (WRPG), which typically focus on open-world exploration and player agency, and Japanese RPGs (JRPG), known for their structured storytelling and turn-based combat systems. Classic examples of RPGs include "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim," "Final Fantasy," and more recent games like "The Witcher 3", each offering different and unique mechanics but all including a focus on player immersion, exploration, and progression.

The Walking Dead -
Saints and Sinners:
A first-person VR game where players play as a hardened survivor traveling through a walker-infested, semi-flooded New Orleans. Every challenge you face and decision you make is driven by YOU. Fight the undead, scavenge through the flooded ruins of New Orleans, and face gut-wrenching choices for you and the other survivors. Live The Walking Dead's dark drama in your own skin.

The Map
Here is an example of a map that you progress through as you complete the storyline. You can visit different parts of the world to collect different items, meet different NPCs and complete quests. Each place has different difficulties and challenges, which is an effective way to incentivize players to level up and improve their weapons and strength before progressing with the main story. New areas are unlocked through completing quests and advancing with the main story, and new places offer materials, and loot that players are able to collect.

Crafting
There is a crafting system at the home base, where the player must scavenge different items and salvage them to make new items or weapons. Crafting recipes are unlocked by either upgrading crafting stations or finding them in safes or random drops. There are three Workbenches in the game: the Survival Workbench the Guns Workbench; and the Gear Workbench. The Survival Workbench is for bows, health, and food. The Guns Workbench is for pistols, revolvers, shotguns, rifles and ammo. The Gear Workbench is for explosives and melee weapons. At each bench, the player can also upgrade their vital statistics. There are 45 recipes, 30 of these are unlocked by upgrading workbenches, which costs scrap. The other 15 crafting recipes are unlocked by finding them in the world. Scrap is one of the key components of the crafting system, acting as the required resource to craft items and upgrades.
The Inventory
In the game you can pick up objects and store them on your back. Then if you want to grab something you need to physically reach behind your back and take out your backpack, then you physically search in it and grab what you’re looking for and put your backpack back. If you accidentally drop it, it goes back behind your shoulder. However this has limited space. Forcing players to prioritize what they carry with them and preventing players from collecting an unlimited number of materials for hours, and easily upgrading everything when crafting. This means you must constantly revisit your home base, slowing the progression of the game and making it longer to complete. There is also a level of strategy involved, as you have to consider that dying will mean your backpack does not respawn with you, meaning you may have to go on retrieval missions to get your items back, or give them up and start over. You do have a home inventory system, with a storage chest that allows players to have backup stock or keep collectibles/chosen items safe.

The Journal
The journal acts as a quest log for current and completed quests in the linear storyline. It includes a detailed summary of the task you have to complete, where you need to go, and what to expect. This can help players to strategize, and optimize their playing time to be rewarding, whilst providing a sense of productivity as they tick things off the task list. It adds an organized element to a game filled with so much chaos, preventing overwhelm for users and a clear guide to playing, whilst maintaining the ability for players to problem solve.

My Evaluation
I thoroughly enjoyed this game, as me and my dad took turns playing, helping each other to solve the storyline and complete all the quests. I thought the plot was interesting, with compelling characters and immersive decisions, and the difficulty was just right, as it still provided challenge, without being too hard and demotivating. I found it to be completely unique to other games, due to the VR platform making the combat more realistic, providing a welcome adrenaline rush that increased the overall immersion. However, at some points the storyline became a little bit hard to follow, and the ending was quite a disappointment as it was very underwhelming, I feel like there wasn't any solution to the main conflict between the survivors and walkers, which was a bit of a letdown. Despite this, I would recommend this RPG game to people who are looking for a fun amount of stress and a unique gaming experience, as it kept me surprised and entertained throughout.

Developing skills, attributes, and abilities
The clothes you wear in Hogwarts Legacy determine your health, defence, and offence level. You can put on handwear, facewear, headwear, neckwear, cloaks, robes, and general outfits. All items of clothing have different stats, that can be upgraded by adding traits in the room of requirement. This gives your gear special features that can benefit you in certain situations, e.g. Making a spell do extra damage etc... You can find more gear from chests around the world and as rewards from quests, and you can also sell them for coins. However, the clothes you wear are completely customisable in design, as you can change the appearance of your gear to be anything you have previously found, meaning that the look of your character can be modified to your preference.

Inventory
The inventory in Hogwarts legacy is split into 4 sections. The first section is for beasts that you capture, introducing the ability to rescue and therefore collect resources from these creatures, or sell them for a good price. This is also where you store your rideable companions, that can help you to travel or win battles. The next section is for your quest items, such as the keeper's wand and your telescope. These are gained from completing various missions throughout the game and aid you with certain challenges or completing the overall storyline. Then there is the notes sections, which contains all the letters you have collected, providing players with extra lore to discover, increasing the immersion of the game for die-hard fans that want to know all the details of the storyline. Finally, the resources inventory is for things that you have collected or grown, and can be used for challenges, quests, crafting, brewing or growing.
Quests
Quests are split into main, side, relationship and assignments. Main quests are key for progressing in the storyline and are essential to advance in the game, due tp its linear features, with the main objective being to defeat the main antagonists, Ranrok and Rookwood. Side quests aren’t necessary to complete the main storyline but can add some additional fun for players who want to enrich their gaming experience and earn new rewards. Relationship quests allow players to explore the stories and backgrounds of their companions, making the storyline more immersive with cutscenes and dialogue between the player and the other characters. Finally, assignment quests are like mini tutorials in the form of homework, teaching you about the core mechanics of the game, whilst rewarding you with new spells that will be useful in combat, puzzles etc...

Levelling up
XP is earned through general playing of the game, more specifically from the completion of quests, victory in combat, solving puzzles and collecting resources. This XP increases your level, and each level gives you 1 talent point to spend on upgrading various aspects of the game. You can upgrade your spells, dark arts, stealth, room of requirements, or your core gameplay. Examples of these upgrades are that a ring of fire surrounds your character when you cast a spell, or that the duration of your potions effects last longer.

Target
Demographic
This game is targeted at teens and adults who are interested in the harry potter saga, or just the fantasy, magical genre in general, as it is set before the movies/books, meaning that knowledge of the harry potter universe isn't necessary. The beautiful, magical visuals appeal to most people, and the game isn't too difficult, making it subject to a broad target audience.
Overall Reviews
Hogwarts Legacy generally received positive reviews for capturing the magic and atmosphere of the Harry Potter universe in an open-world RPG setting. It is commonly praised for its attention to detail, character customization, spell casting mechanics, and expansive world. It appeals to both casual and hardcore fans by balancing nostalgic elements with fresh gameplay. However, some players find the game contains repetitive quest structures and lack of innovation in certain RPG mechanics. Despite this, 88% of critics recommend Hogwarts Legacy on opencritic.com, as it is considered one of the more immersive experiences within the fantasy genre, especially for fans of the wizarding world.
My Evaluation
I love this game! The variation from the cozy, warm feel when walking around hogsmeade or exploring the castle, to the heart rate accelerating battles against trolls, goblins and dark wizards, means this game ticks every box. It effectively keeps you engaged in the storyline, with plot twists and interesting characters. The map is gorgeous and super detailed, with exploration challenges everywhere, to enhance the effects of it being an open-world game; and being able to travel through it on a broomstick is an exhilarating feature. The ability to be able to make your own decisions, going down good and bad routes, adds an extra layer of depth to the game, making the story even more interesting. The only modification I could think of is to improve the replay-ability, as the game becomes more boring when all the main quests have been finished, as there isn't much left to do but start over, and as the game is so long this seems quite overwhelming and puts me off restarting. Nevertheless, this game is breathtakingly beautiful and thought through, so much so that even the little details still entertain me, and i would highly recommend it.
